Deportivo: Vazquez wasn’t motivated

Tino Fernandez, the President of Deportivo La Coruna, has revealed he sacked Fernando Vazquez because he doubted the Coach’s motivation.

Vazquez was removed from his post earlier this week despite guiding Deportivo back to the top flight.

Fernandez has explained the thinking behind the decision, accusing Vazquez of not being motivated, adding that his criticism of the club’s transfer policy was also a factor.

“I don’t think someone who makes such statements is motivated 100%,” Marca reports Fernandez as saying.

“I’m convinced the decision is best for the future of Deportivo.

“He got the results and I congratulate him. But he is not the person I want in light of these things.

[Vazquez] wasn’t in doubt [before criticising the club] even though there were things I wasn’t convinced by.

“We’re in the First Division and we need a project to be first, to be sure of being in the First Division and all the team united, motivated and believing it, not 100% but 150% and the Coach is instrumental.

“I believed his motivation wasn’t sufficient.”

Fernandez added that he intends to confirm Vazquez’s successor by next Monday at the latest, when Deportivo begin their pre-season training.

“[The new Coach will be] the best fit for the project, who has been in the Primera and knows it, and a Coach who was won things,” Fernandez promised.
