Velasco Carballo to ref WC final?

Carlos Velasco Carballo is a contender to referee the World Cup final after surviving the cull of officials, with the number down to 15.

AS reports that the appointments for the third place play-off and the final have yet to be made but the Spaniard is among the options.

Velasco Carballo took charge of Uruguay’s win over England and Bosnia-Herzegovina’s win over Iran in the group stages, before taking the whistle for Brazil’s quarter-final victory against Colombia.

He was criticised for his performance in the hosts’ 2-1 win, wrongly ruling out a goal for Colombia centre-back Mario Yepes and letting some rough challenges slide in a game that saw Neymar’s tournament come to an end after a clumsy challenge from Camilo Zuniga.
