Eibar win promotion

Eibar have earned promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history after beating Alaves yesterday.

The Basque club needed Las Palmas to lose to Recreativo Huelva, which they duly did despite taking a two-goal lead.

Recreativo came back to win 3-2 and keep their promotion hopes alive, sending Eibar into the Primera in the process, AS reports.

But Marca adds that Eibar could still be relegated back to Segunda B, however, as they struggle to conform with financial regulations.

A share issue is to be held to help the club raise the necessary funds despite Eibar being financially healthy.

The campaign, launched last week, is backed by Real Madrid pair Xabi Alonso and Asier Illarramendi. Alonso played for Eibar earlier in his career while Illarra is from the region.

If Las Palmas had beaten Recre they would have gone third, four points behind Eibar and within touching distance of a top two finish.

With two games to play Eibar hold a seven-point lead over third place Sporting Gijon, with Deportivo La Coruna in second, a point behind Gaizka Garitano’s side.

Deportivo would have been promoted yesterday if they had beaten Numancia, only to lose 2-1. But with a six-point lead prior to the last two fixtures of the season, Depor are all-but-promoted regardless.

Jota Peleteiro scored the goal that sealed Eibar’s win over local rivals Alaves and put them on the path to promotion, Eibar reaching the top flight with back-to-back promotions after exiting the Segunda B last summer.
