Pizzi: Valencia need Mathieu

Valencia Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi says Los Che need to do all they can to keep hold of defender Jeremy Mathieu.

The Frenchman has gained plaudits for his performances during a season in which the Mestalla outfit have otherwise been riddled by inconsistency.

His form has reportedly attracted the attention of new Barcelona Coach Luis Enrique, but speaking at a Press conference Pizzi stressed the 30-year-old is happy at his current club.

“We need him and he is very happy here,” Pizzi said. “I think he has had the best form of his career this season and the best form of any defender in the Spanish League.”

The tactician was also asked about his transfer plans this summer, with Valencia having recently been taken by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim. However, he revealed that some details of Lim’s acquisition of the club are still yet to be finalised.

“All the loan players need to come back, then we’ll decide what to do. In principle, they will all be at our disposal.

“I cannot imagine that either Lim or anyone else would say here, here’s a war chest and you can spend whatever it takes.

“We need to be prudent because the formalities of the sale have still not gone through. There are issues with the bank and the foundation, so the sooner they are solved the better.”
