Enrique warns Barca players

Luis Enrique says he decided to return to Barcelona in order to win trophies and warns players that there will be changes if they are not good enough.

The 44-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Camp Nou as a player and was today confirmed as the new Blaugrana Coach.

Speaking to the media for the first time since taking the reins at the Catalan giants, the tactician acknowledged the need to strengthen his squad and accepted that the demands of him in the job would be high.

“I’ve seen a lot of the team this season,” Enrique told the assembled media. “The players need to understand that if you’re not at the required level there can be changes. There is a transfer market and you have to manage a lot of things.

“We will strengthen in every department and we will put together an exciting team.

“We have had a very good period, with a lot of titles and good play. It’s difficult to accustom yourself to anything other than winning and playing well.

“The demand is of the highest level. I am here to win trophies and it will be that which decides how long I am here with the team.”

The 44-year-old then answered questions on tactics and comparisons between himself and Pep Guardiola.

“What we need to do is find a system that suits the players we have, whatever the formation may be.

“I need to ensure that Barca train well. The intensity has to be there because the way you play is a reflection of the way you train. There will be intensity.

“There is no better way to defend then to keep the ball. We need to surprise the opponent and we have means to be able to do that.

“There are lots of interesting things we need to decide and we need to improve a lot of things. We need to look to be unpredictable.

“I greet Guardiola and I congratulate him for what he has achieved this year. I’m not scared of anything, this is one of the best days of my life.

“I spoke to him, we are friends and our families have a very good relationship.”
