Escriba: Elche had chances

Fran Escriba was disappointed to see Elche lose 2-0 to Atletico Madrid last night as he feels his side had chances to score.

A Miranda header and a Diego Costa penalty gave Atletico the win to maintain their title challenge but Escriba told his post-match Press conference that the result could have been different.

“We needed a goal to get something from here because 90 minutes is difficult against a team that doesn’t create a lot of chances but takes them well,” Marca reports Escriba as saying.

“In the first-half we did well with the ball but we struggled in the second, didn’t get into their area and struggled to have the ball.

“We didn’t deserve to lose 2-0 but the difference between 1-0 and 2-0 is talk.

“This team will fight and hope everything will be fine.”

The result leaves Elche in 14th, four points clear of the bottom three.

Escriba, who was assistant to Quique Flores during his time as Atletico Coach, added that he wants to see Diego Simeone’s side land the title.

“I have great affection for this club and hopefully they win the League,” Escriba continued.

“I wish them luck too in the Champions League but my concern is my team.”
