JIM: Sensational an understatement

Real Valladolid Coach Juan Ignacio Martinez has heaped praise upon his players after their 1-0 win over Barcelona.

A first half Fausto Rossi goal gave Valladolid three points and dented Barca’s title challenge, allowing Atletico Madrid to move a point clear of Barca at the top of the table, level with Real Madrid, who play on Sunday and could have a four-point advantage over the Catalans by the close of play.

Speaking at a post-match Press conference, Martinez waxed lyrical about the performance of his side.

“I agree Barca didn’t play well but we deserve some credit for that. We closed all their attacking options,” Martinez said.

“This is a very satisfying win. Our opponent was very difficult. But don’t forget it is only three points and we have to add many more.

“I’m very happy for the fans. They understand that the team has put in a huge effort and the club has been in difficult situations and have made a fight of [the relegation battle].

“This win has to give us a little bit more belief.”

Valladolid are now out of the bottom three, level on points with 18-placed Almeria but ahead on goal difference.

Asked what was the defining factor in the victory, Martinez emphasised the importance of hard work.

“I’ll take the effort and mental work. Playing without the ball is very difficult but we did it perfectly.

“The team can take honour from their work. To say it was sensational is an understatement.

“We won with our weapons. The players believed strongly in what we did during the week but we have to remember it has already passed. These are only three points and we have more finals to play this season. We will continue with the same humility.

“I’m a normal person so I understand this win will be celebrated with a party but when we play again it’ll be another pressure game. There are still many finals to go this year.”
