Escriba: Defence will keep Elche up

Elche Coach Fran Escriba has praised his side’s defensive after a fourth straight home clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Celta Vigo.

Carles Gil’s goal gave Elche the victory and moved Escriba’s side six points clear of the bottom three prior to Sunday’s fixtures.

“[The defence] is important,” Escriba told reporters following the final whistle.

“The team got here through defensive solidity and it’s obvious to us that staying in the top flight will come from that.

“Hopefully we can get to the stage where we can attack teams more but for now, we know what we are.”

Despite the victory Escriba was at pains to insist Elche are far from safe yet.

“We’re closer but there’s a lot ahead,” he added.

“It’s too soon to think we’re comfortable and it’s important to keep getting points, more points than we got in the first half of the season.

“Let’s see if we can get past the 30 point mark, because that will take us to the last part of our objective.”

Escriba also conceded that Elche were a little fortunate to beat Celta but felt it was about time fortune was on their side.

“We’ve had a touch of luck that hasn’t been there at other times.

“Our goal came when we were thinking about sticking with what he had because in the second half Celta were the better team.

“But in the first half we had the better chances.”
