Villarreal’s El Madrigal will not be closed as punishment for tear gas being let off during the match against Celta Vigo.

But the club have been fined €6,000 and warned that another serious incident will see the stadium shut for an unspecified period of time, AS reports.

Villarreal were also given a written warning but the club has been praised for the orderly way in which fans were evacuated.

The identity of the supporter who threw the tear gas canister onto the pitch has not yet been established. The incident left 15 fans in need of medical attention.

Play was suspended for 20 minutes but the game was finished that night, Celta winning 2-0.
