Madrid waiting on Gundogan fitness

Real Madrid are monitoring the fitness of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who hasn’t played since August.

Marca reports that Los Blancos have the first option on the Germany international after attempting to sign him last summer.

Dortmund however resisted the approach as they did not want to sell Gundogan in the same transfer window that Mario Gotze joined Bayern Munich.

Madrid did though claim first refusal on Gundogan but a chronic back problem has seen the 23-year-old absent for almost the entire campaign.

Doctors in Germany have been unable to cure the problem and as it stands, Madrid will not take up the option to sign Gundogan.

But should Gundogan return to fitness before the summer, Madrid could resurrect the deal.
