Valverde ‘hoped for a win’

Ernesto Valverde was delighted with a point, but thought his Athletic Bilbao side could have beaten Real Madrid.

Los Leones drew 1-1 at San Mames with Los Blancos, after Ibai Gomez had cancelled out Jese’s earlier goal.

“I thought our first half was very good,” he told a Press conference. “And if I’m honest, I was hoping for a win after all the good work we’d done.

“It’s only normal though, that Real Madrid would improve in the second half because they are a team full of champions.”

The tactician then commented on Cristiano Ronaldo’s straight red card for an alleged elbow to Carlos Gurpegi.

“I can’t really say anything about it, because I didn’t see it on the field and I haven’t watched a replay.”
