Valverde laments ‘unexpected’ defeat

Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde was left to rue what he considered an unexpected 2-0 defeat at Basque rivals Real Sociedad.

Goals at the end of either half from Antoine Griezmann and Ruben Pardo ensured Jagoba Arrasate’s men cut the gap between themselves and Los Leones in fourth spot to just one point.

However, Valverde was at pains to point out he believed his team lost the match because they lacked the killer instinct in attack.

“We missed a golden opportunity to win here and this was an unexpected loss,” he told a post-match Press conference.

“We lacked composure with our final pass and there were many situations where we did not choose the right option.

“Our opponents undeservedly led 1-0 at the break thanks to a great goal from Griezmann but we controlled most of the match,” he insisted.
