Ancelotti: Alonso will play regardless

Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Xabi Alonso will keep on playing for Real Madrid whether he renews with the club or not.

The Spain international’s current deal at Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the season, but reports today have suggested that he will not put pen to paper on an extension.

However, ahead of their game against Valencia on Sunday, the Italian tactician has claimed that Alonso will still play regardless of his future.

“They are holding talks but there’s no news yet,” he told a Press conference.

“Xabi will remain a Real Madrid player until June 2014 and he will continue to play whether he renews his contract or not.

“We’ll see what happens. He is a very important player and he will always play, whenever he is available.

“I haven’t had that kind of conversation with the club, I don’t need to. The board of directors want Xabi Alonso to renew because he’s an important player who has quality and experience.

“He’s one of the best midfielders in the world and that’s why we want him to extend his contract.

“I don’t think we over depend on him. We have a lot of good players and we’ve played half of the season without Xabi, gaining good results.

“Xabi has brought more confidence to our game.

“It’s going to be a difficult game at a crucial moment. They’ve just changed their Coach and we’ll be up against a side who will be very motivated. We want to end the year well, playing good football and collecting all three points.”
