‘We showed we are competitive’

Toni Aparicio praised his Xativa Olimpic players for their performance against Real Madrid, suggesting that it demonstrated the side’s competitiveness.

The Valencian outfit were defeated by first half goals from Asier Illarramendi and Angel di Maria for a 2-0 scoreline on the night and on aggregate, but they successfully frustrated their hosts in the second half last night.

“This was a game clearly dominated by Madrid. They have scored very early and have made us take extra care. We struggled to create chances and Madrid were deserved winners,” Coach Aparicio mused afterwards.

“Can we consider the scoreline an achievement? It is neither an achievement nor anything else. We wanted to enjoy the game against a great team.

“We have shown that we are a competitive team and that whilst the differences between the two teams is abysmal, my players have demonstrated that they know how to play.

“Is the competition’s format good? For a small club it is best to only have the one game at their ground, although the larger clubs will not like this.”
