‘We’d happily postpone Christmas!’

Tata Martino was delighted with Barcelona’s performance as they beat Villarreal 2-1 on Saturday evening.

The Blaugrana beat the Yellow Submarine at Camp Nou thanks to two goals from Neymar, and the Coach has eulogised about his boys.

“My aspiration is always for us to do better. I thought the side’s performance was great,” he told a Press conference.

“Our opponents knew exactly how to wait and then attack the spaces and they also knew how to press.

“Villarreal play really well and they are an impeccably well worked side. The victory strengthens the team.

“It’s not about me. I don’t think it strengthens or weakens my position. Winning like this makes the players believe.

“It’s a shame the League takes a break now because we’re playing well. I didn’t want to say it before we played such a strong rival, but having played three great games I have to – we could happily postpone Christmas.”

The Argentine tactician then went on to comment on several members of the squad.

I thought I should play with Song and not Xavi and I was thinking about a game with the wing-backs playing very high up.

“They played with five in midfield and that changed everything. The game forced us to play higher up and receive the ball from behind.

“I decided to change things when they equalised and not change anything when we were winning. Song played a decent game.

I can’t talk about Busquets every day, because there’s no need. You [the journalists] need to talk about how good he is. Everything’s been said.

Everybody misses Messi and rivals are happy he’s not playing. We’ll always miss him, whether we win or lose. The best player in the world is always missed. With him we could have played even better.

I rate the win because we played well and because of the level of the opposition, not because Madrid drew.

“I’m happy because we knew how to get through the tough bits of the game. That always leads to good things.”
