‘Real Betis needed a spark’

Miguel Guillen has explained that Real Betis have acted to replace Pepe Mel with Juan Carlos Garrido to provide the team with the necessary ‘spark’.

Los Beticos acted on Monday evening to remove the popular Mel and, at his replacement’s unveiling, the club President explained why.

“We wanted to end the dynamics of bad results. We are here to make decisions,” Guillen has commented.

“We have bet on Juan Carlos Garrido based on his extensive resume at important clubs. He has the board’s support and consideration as the right person to change the results.

“His discourse with the players is based on work, we all understand what we need. He has the capabilities to achieve the goal, which is to reverse the situation at our club. We wish him every success from day one.

“The fans are angry? The decision has been painful for what it represents, but it is also true that we must make such decisions.

“We have seen that the sporting situation experienced needed a spark. We were not able to get results to ease our minds.

“We have done the right thing because we have sought to give the new Coach a minimum margin to take over the team with two games left this year in the League.

“He has 15 days to gain a more extensive understanding of the squad. We spoke to him through the weekend. We are all responsible for the good and the bad.

“The sporting situation was critical, I fully understand and I can admit that there is a diversity of views, but there is no justification for violence against decisions made.”
