Mel bids emotional farewell

Pepe Mel broke down in tears as he bid farewell to Real Betis after three years on Monday evening.

The 50-year-old was sacked yesterday evening following a difficult start to the season, which after 15 rounds has Betis sitting bottom of La Liga.

At a Press conference opened by club President Miguel Guillen, who expressed his personal thanks to Mel and his assistants, the tactician bid an emotional farewell.

“This is the Press conference that I never wanted to give. I want to thank the President for his words,” began Mel to reporters.

“There is a long and extensive list of thank yous that I have for many people. We start with all the players that we have had since 2010, the kit men, the medical team, the media.

“Thank you for your involvement and for the work you have done with us. We have had bad moments and together we have overcome those.

“This has unfortunately not been possible to resolve as well. I want to thank the Betis fans from the bottom of my heart.

“I ask of you to show the same love that you have given me to the new Coach that is coming. Thank you all very much.”

At that point, Mel broke down in tears and left the Pressroom. Juan Carlos Garrido comes in as his replacement.
