Mel: Betis would’ve stayed up

Pepe Mel does not believe Real Betis would have been relegated this season under him, and that he was at least going to get until the end of the year.

The 50-year-old Coach and his assistant Roberto Rios were called to the Benito Villamarin on Monday evening and informed by the club that they were being removed from their positions.

Whilst a difficult start to the season had left Los Beticos in last place in La Liga, Mel mused shortly after his emotional farewell that the decision perhaps came too soon.

“Right now I am little upset. There has been a great deal of work. I leave with my heart full of love and that cannot be taken away by anyone,” began the technician on Cadena SER.

“I’m sure that Betis with me would not have gone down. I thought that the stadium I was going to be told: ‘Look Pepe, San Sebastian and Almeria [Betis’ final two League games of the calendar year]’.

“The speed of my being replaced? The world of football is like a ladies’ hairdressers. Everybody talks, everybody says things…

“I understand the law of football. I understand. I’m a Coach and I know how this happens.”
