Modric: I’m happy in Madrid

Luka Modric has explained that an upturn in form this season for Real Madrid is simply down to the fact that he is happy.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult first few months in the Spanish capital last season, before form picked up towards the end of the campaign and, under Carlo Ancelotti, has continued into this term.

“I’m playing well because I am happy and I am content,” considered Modric to Croatian reporters this week.

“I was happy in England and it showed in my game. Now I am in Madrid and it also shows.”

The midfielder is on duty with Croatia as they bid for a place in the World Cup, facing Iceland in European qualifying’s two-legged play-offs this month.

“The conditions [of -1 degree Celsius and 40km/h winds] will be the same for them as they will be for us. We know that we have not played well in the past, so we want to make the Croatian people happy.

“Honestly, the qualification depends on us, on what we do. We know that several of the Icelandic players are very dangerous, such as Sigurdsson, Sigthorssona and Gudjohnsen is an old fox.

“If they finished second in their group it is because they are good.”
