‘We had to suffer at Coliseum’

Ernesto Valverde was happy for Athletic Bilbao’s breaking of a winless run at Getafe, where he reflected sides ‘have to suffer’.

The Basque Country side saw Aymeric Laporte’s early goal prove enough to record a first win at the Colisuem Alfonso Perez on Monday evening.

“It’s funny because we had never won here and had that in our minds,” considered Valverde after breaking that run.

“Getafe has always been a good team and pressured much. It is a very complicated ground where teams have a hard time and have to suffer. At the Coliseum, you can only win through suffering. Even the best teams have had a hard time here.

“My players were very together. We struggled to move the ball from one side to the other. It seemed like we had the game under control but we were unable to for a lack of fluency to get the ball.

“Can we qualify for the Champions League? We have played 10 games and the objective is to score points and define the target later.

“On Thursday we play Elche, who are also complicated.”
