‘Every mistake has been a goal’

Ricardo Costa has reflected that Valencia’s inexperience and tendency to over-complicate their play is the reason for their inconsistency.

Los Che fell to a 4-1 defeat at Villarreal on Sunday evening to drop back down into the lower half of the table.

For their captain, attitude is not the issue in the dressing room.

“The attitude is always there, the players always have it, but they can go wrong,” Costa has considered this week.

“The players give their most because they always want to win and on from that, we then have to wonder.

“It is true that we have a lot of young players who have to grow up and have to do it fast for the good of Valencia and for us as a team, because we have to win more games.

“We have to play as we have in the Europa League. If we do things simple, in the middle with one or two touches, with more vertical combinations on the wings, anyone would have difficulty competing with us.

“And if we look at all the big teams, none play down the middle. Barcelona are even changing their game.

“Teams have less room to play inside, and they know that we have quality players who play in the middle.

“They have pressured us and from there have stolen possession and that can hurt us and lead to goals. This year, every mistake has been a goal.”
