Escriba: Elche always suffering

Fran Escriba remarked on his Elche side’s preparedness to ‘always suffer’ as partly why they were able to defeat Real Betis 2-1 with 10 men.

The promoted outfit picked up the surprise win thanks to Manu del Moral and Fidel’s quick-fire double in the first half.

Whilst Betis pulled one back before the break through Jorge Molina and Elche then began the second half with Domingo Cisma’s second yellow, the visitors held on for the 2-1 win.

“This is a very important victory because we have needed to keep adding points and to earn more confidence,” Escriba admitted afterwards.

“We went through 45 minutes in their field after the red card and, for the difficulties that this has entailed, we have been able to hold on for the win.

“I will focus on the team effort. For this we have earned three points. We have come here with a clear goal and have not lost our heads. They key was to stop the initial effort from Betis.

“We scored two goals in a row but the match was conditioned by playing with a man less. It was difficult and there was a lot of effort even though [Sergio Mantecon’s chance] could have given us more space.

“We are always suffering in every game. Beyond the first match with Rayo where we were very bad, that will always be our keynote.”
