Javier Aguirre has admitted that Espanyol’s 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Saturday was a ‘very welcome win’.

The Periquitos ended the capital club’s 100 per cent start to the season yesterday evening, thanks to a second half own goal from Thibaut Courtois.

And the Mexican Coach has conceded that his side needed the three points after a mixed start to the campaign.

“We knew it was going to be a very intense game,” he told a Press conference. “Having lost badly last time at home, we needed to get back to playing like ourselves.

“We wanted to give the fans some joy – and it was a very welcome win because of that.

“I have a large, strong and feisty squad at my disposal. Undoubtedly Atletico Madrid are one of the teams we want to emulate.

“They are an example to the League. Fortune smiled on us today, but I have to congratulate my players for beating a superior team in terms of budget.”
