‘Betis showed up an hour late’

Pepe Mel complained that Real Betis ‘came into the game an hour late’ against Getafe, having lacked intensity, but takes full responsibility.

Los Beticos fell to a 3-1 reverse in the capital on Sunday night thanks to an early trio of goals from the hosts arriving in the first half-an-hour.

“We came into the game an hour too late,” complained Mel after the defeat.

“Getafe, like any team in the Primera Division, will crush you if you do not show up on the field. I have told my players that at the break and this is going to cost us to train and start from scratch.

“You have to put the same intensity into the game as the opponent and in the first half we have not even challenged for the ball, in the air or in the second plays. This is very difficult.

“In the Primera you only win through intensity. Like in the first half we have not and the second half we did, the problem is mine. Now we have to work and fix it.

“The problem is mine, I am the Coach and I am responsible. We are playing in three competitions, but if we do not put in the intensity then we will not play in any.

“As a Betis fan I am ashamed for the first half. The game was at seven and we arrived at eight.”
