Ernesto Valverde was left happy with Athletic Bilbao’s winning start to life at the new San Mames, and hopes it is a good omen for the future.
The Basques made it nine points from a possible 12 to begin the League season with thanks to a 3-2 win on Monday evening over Celta Vigo.
“It was a very open game in the first half and more closed in the second,” surmised Valverde afterwards.
“Apart from the three points, we fulfilled the ambition of starting in the new San Mames with a win.
“The fact that we have gotten nine points is very important. Hopefully it is a good omen, the field is great.
“We are happy because we have won and there have been things that have been very good.
“I want to focus on the comeback because it was not easy to begin by losing on a day that was very special and in addition for a clear error [from Athletic’s Erik Moran].”
