Mel: Winning always necessary

Pepe Mel reflected on Real Betis’ display in defeating Valencia, believing that they could have scored more goals and that now they deserve more points.

Los Beticos earned their first League win of the season thanks to a goal from Jorge Molina and two from Salva Sevilla in the first half against Los Che on Sunday evening.

“A win is always necessary. When you do, what may be bad is not seen,” mused Mel post-match.

“It was unjust that we now only have four points. We have played well enough to have more. On other occasions we have not deserved points.

“We needed to play well against a team that is going to be up there in the table. We have largely been the better team. We could have scored more goals.”

Betis head into the Europa League this midweek and the Coach was asked if this result convinces him differently on any possible team selections.

“[This result] changes nothing. The team will play the same regardless of what has happened here. Our bread is what was here. We have to win as many games as we can in the League.

“What we have to do in Europe is pass through the first round. From this point, we want to enjoy it, whilst we will not do anything to hurt us ahead of playing Granada [in Week 5].

“We do not want to rough it. Going down to the Segunda would be awful.”
