Villar wants La Liga format change

Angel Maria Villar wants La Liga’s format changed to encourage a more level playing field.

The President of the Spanish Football Federation has been searching for ways to encourage fairer competition in the top flight and for clubs to challenge the hegemony of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

With a more equal distribution of television revenue still some way off, Villar now feels there needs to be modifications to a League where to finish third is a moral victory for all but two of its clubs.

According to reports in Spain, he is thinking of altering the way the competition is run and using a similar system to the one employed in Mexico, where the top eight play a knockout format for the title with quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final.

However, there would only be one champion per season, unlike in Mexico where there are two.
