Rayo fans plan protest at schedule

A group of Rayo Vallecano fans are planning a protest at the opening two home games of the new season.

The club’s most vociferous section of supporters, The Bukaneros, have issued an official statement stating they will make a series of protests over the kick-off times and days set for Rayo’s first two La Liga games at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas.

The opening fixture against newly-promoted Elche will be played on Monday at 9pm local time, while the third game against Levante has been pencilled in for Friday August 30 at 11pm.

The Bukaneros, meanwhile, are proposing to withdraw their support until the 24th minute of both games, a measure they will also employ for any match played on a Monday or Friday next term.

At the Elche game they plan to unfurl a giant banner criticising the timetable, while for the Levante clash they will ask fellow Bukaneros not to frequent their usual spot behind the goal until 24 minutes have elapsed.

The actions, however, will not just be confined to Vallecas as a similar show of dissent is set to be organised outside Spanish League headquarters in Madrid, at a time and date yet to be announced.

In the meantime, the decision to join in the protest has been left to each individual member.
