Vilanova surgery ‘satisfactory’

Former Barcelona Coach Tito Vilanova underwent surgery on Tuesday in a procedure reportedly described as ‘satisfactory’.

The 44-year-old saw tests last week confirm that cancer of the parotid gland in his throat had returned for a third time, forcing him to stand down as Barca Coach.

On the day that the club announced his replacement as Gerardo Martino, the tactician underwent surgery in the Catalan capital.

Mundo Deportivo report that the operation, which was the fourth surgical intervention for Vilanova since his first diagnosis in November 2011, was ‘satisfactory’.

Vilanova will now continue to be monitored and will undergo a further round of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
