Valdano: Martino a wise move

Jorge Valdano has backed Barcelona’s decision to turn to the ‘unknown’ Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino as Coach.

Barca have appointed the Argentine tactician on a two-year deal in light of seeing Tito Vilanova stand down last week due to ill health.

For one former Real Madrid player, Coach and director, the move deserves credit.

“The knowledge of a Barcelona fan on Tata Martino is null,” began Valdano on Chilean station Radio Cooperativa in reference to his countryman.

“He is like an alien even to most of the sports journalists in Spain. In fact, in the betting he was given support of around seven per cent or so, it is ignorance, nothing else.

“But the people are, in record time, accumulating data. He is a character that deserves to be known, he is discreet, knowledgeable and very restrained emotionally.

“It seems to me that this is a decision consistent with the style of Barcelona. I think the decision for Barca is faultless.”

Valdano also reflected on the aesthetic appeal of Spanish football at the moment.

“Spain and Barcelona have conveyed an idea of football that is kinder to the spectator. I see an example as Bayern Munich, who won everything last year but it is still not enough. As if the results were not enough to fascinate and seduce. Hence why Bayern have turned to Guardiola.

“It is a revolution that is not only involving Barca and Madrid, but teams like Villarreal, Sevilla, Betis and Zaragoza.”
