‘Season to be enjoyed by Real’

Imanol Agirretxe says that Real Sociedad are looking to enjoy this coming season, which sees them return to the Champions League.

The San Sebastian side’s fourth place finish last season has secured them a place in the qualifying round of UEFA’s premier competition for this term and the possibility of making the group stages for the first time in a decade.

For their 26-year-old forward, next season is one to be enjoyed by everyone, for the contrast it represents to other recent years, when the club struggled financially and dropped to the Segunda Division.

“After some difficult times in the past, this season shall be to the enjoyment of all my teammates, everyone at the club and for all the fans,” Agirretxe reflected this week.

“Last season helped us to know that we can do great things.

“It is true that things have changed with the Coach, but the dynamics under [Jagoba] Arrasate and [Philippe] Montanier] are similar.”

The striker faces competition for places this season from new signing Haris Seferovic.

“He is a player with a great future. Today La Real are unable to sign ‘superstars’ for the price that they are at, but I believe that they are placing a significant bet with a young player here who has a great future.

“It is important to strengthen the team for the competitions that we will be playing in. I hope that the signings contribute much.”

Agirretxe was also quizzed on possibilities of renewing his contract.

“There was a conversation at the beginning of the summer, but I understand that the club are now thinking towards other things and that my renewal is not a priority.”
