Malaga defender Martin Demichelis looks set to sign for Atletico Madrid after rejecting a new contract at La Rosaleda.
According to Spanish radio station COPE, the Argentine international is poised to join Los Rojiblancos for one season in exchange for €1.5m, after which he will return to his native country to wind down his playing days with former club River Plate, where he began as a youngster.
Demichelis, who will turn 33 in December, spent eight years with Bayern Munich following his move from River in 2003, before falling out with boss Louis van Gaal when he was dropped for the 2010-11 season’s opening fixture with Wolfsburg.
However, he relaunched his career with the Costa del Sol outfit when he agreed a loan deal in December 2010, the Andalusians exercising their option to extend his contract for a further two seasons the following June.
Atleti boss Diego Simeone has been searching for another centre-back to provide competition for Miranda and Diego Godin in the middle of his defence.
