‘Training Athletic is very special’

New Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valverde has not set out any targets for the upcoming season, but has admitted that his team has 'potential'.

The former Valencia Coach replaced Marcelo Bielsa on the bench at San Mames, and has claimed he is excited about the prospect of the new campaign.

“The players were a little nervous today,” he told a Press conference. “But they were willing to work.

“We have to be ready to compete in six weeks, but the players seem ready.

“We do not have any aspirations. First I have to talk to the lads and see what they want to achieve.

“This team has a lot of potential and our League is losing a lot of quality players. We have remained stable, and hopefully that can be beneficial.

“I hate the word [weakness]. It is too early to say [if we have one]. Maybe we need a left-sided attacker, but I have yet to see this team play.

“For me this is a great responsibility. Training Athletic is very special.”
