Bielsa says goodbye to Bilbao

Former Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa has said goodbye to fans following his official departure from the club this week.

The Chilean’s contract with the Basques ended on June 30 and he has since been replaced by Ernesto Valverde.

Nonetheless, he chose his official Facebook account to send a message to supporters.

“To the Athletic fans, it is time to say goodbye after two years and express my gratitude for everything I have received during my time in Bilbao,” he wrote.

“I feel proud to have belonged to Athletic and honoured to have been given the opportunity to coach the first team.

“Football, that so many times has a magical side to it, gave me the chance to experience two unforgettable campaigns, which in my case meant a formidable human and professional experience.

“This intense period transcended football and I learnt that the Basque Country is expressed through Athletic. The fans are emotional about football in a unique way.

“I think I understand the sentiments, values and principles that sustain Athletic.”

Bielsa went on to reveal that he had been sent gifts and letters from fans and maintained his links with Los Leones would remain ‘massive, durable and indestructible’.

“I want to wish the team luck and every success in the future,” he added.
