Modric wants lead role at Madrid

Luka Modric says he wants a more hands-on role in the Real Madrid midfield next season.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man believes he operates better when directing play from central midfield and is hoping he gets more of a chance to show what he can do there next season.

“I played in central midfield during my four years at Spurs and I play there for the Croatian national team.

“It's where I feel most at home because I can organise and lead the team from there, like the conductor of an orchestra,” the Croatian international told Marca in his first interview with a Spanish newspaper since being signed by Madrid.

“I showed what they expected of me at Old Trafford [in the Champions League]. I found my form in the right place and at just the right time.

“It was an amazing 30 minutes and that was just the start. There will be more performances like that to come,” he promised.

The 27-year-old also reflected on what was ultimately a disappointing season for Madrid, whilst also having some kind words to say about former boss Jose Mourinho.

“We can’t be pleased with how the season went in general because a club like Real Madrid cannot afford to go without winning a trophy.

“However, I can only speak well of Mourinho, who is a fantastic Coach. It was a pleasure to work with him and he taught me how to be more aggressive.

“He always tries to get more out of each player and if you give 100 per cent then he demands 110 per cent.

“If you don’t play to the best of your ability then someone else will come in and take your place,” he explained.
