Depor to extend Vazquez’s contract

Deportivo de La Coruna are to extend boss Fernando Vazquez’s contract for a further two years, with an option for a third.

The 58-year-old was appointed last February to replace Domingos Paciencia, becoming Depor’s third Coach of the season, but was unable to save the Galicians from relegation just 12 months on from last year’s promotion.

However, Vazquez met club President Augusto Cesar Lendoiro on Friday night and both have agreed in principal to the new deal, which will be automatically extended if promotion is achieved in either of the next two seasons.

“Both parties are nearing agreement for him to continue. It just needs the fine details that are necessary at times like this to be ironed out” read a statement on Depor’s official website.

Vazquez, a former boss of Real Betis, Rayo Vallecano and Celta Vigo amongst others, had been without a club six years on taking the job at Riazor and, due to the economic difficulties Depor are currently undergoing, knows that he will have to face life in La Segunda with a reliance on youth.
