Heart procedure for Victor Alvarez

Espanyol’s Victor Alvarez will undergo a minor surgical procedure this week on a small anomaly in his heart.

Routine tests during preseason last summer highlighted that the full-back has a slight defect in his heart.

Whilst doctors cleared him to continue playing as normal, the past year has apparently seen the 20-year-old subjected to numerous tests to continue to make sure of his health.

The player has appeared 18 times so far in La Liga this term and has seemingly remained unaffected by the issue, but the club have reported that they will take definitive action this Thursday.

The youngster will undergo a minor surgical procedure to correct the problem in the hope that it will avoid complications further down the line that could otherwise compromise his career.

It is unsure how long Alvarez, who recently signed a contract extension at Cornella-El Prat, will be sidelined for in recovery, but the chosen course of action is expected to rule him out of contention for representing Spain at the FIFA U-20 World Cup this summer.
