Suarez: Atleti can beat Madrid

Mario Suarez has indicated his faith in Atletico Madrid to defeat Real Madrid in next week’s Copa del Rey Final.

Atleti have not beaten their city rivals since 1999, but their midfielder sees May 17’s Cup final at the Santiago Bernabeu as an opportunity.

“I’m not one for predictions, but since I have been here I have played in three finals and won all three,” commented Suarez to Rolling Stone magazine’s latest issue.

“Maybe they are favourites, but a match can go either way and Atletico are capable. Our fans are going to stand above theirs that day.”

The 26-year-old recently made his debut for the Spanish national team.

“It’s the best midfield in the world with Xavi, Busquets, Iniesta… But they are the best and I do not consider myself in that group.

“My style of play? I like to be noble in the field. I’m one who thinks that you have to hard at the ball, but always for the ball.

“I dislike contact and unsportsmanlike behaviour. I believe that it is not good for football.”
