Valverde: We should have won

Ernesto Valverde reflected that whilst a point away to Atletico Madrid has value, his Valencia side should really have taken all three.

Los Che were the better side in the first half of play, but went in at the break level on 1-1, with Jonas’ early strike cancelled out by Radamel Falcao.

After a second half more dominated by Atleti, the scores remained at 1-1.

“In the first half we built up the play, the game has been ours completely, but we took little advantage of the superiority,” commented Valverde afterwards.

“We lacked punch in the final metres and conceded an equaliser very quickly.

“In the second half, we did not attack as we had in the first and we did not have the fluidity of the first half.

“The team was unbalanced and our thoughts were to oxygenate the midfield, so we made the changes.

“After the break, everything foreshadowed that they would dominate and they pressed very well and attacked quickly.

“The point, if you do a comprehensive analysis of the League, where Atletico have barely let points escape their ground, is good, but analysing the game I am not satisfied, because in the first half we were much more superior.

“The League is not just a game, Atletico are having a great season. This should not detract from that.”
