‘I’d have cut off my finger if…’

Javier Aguirre says that he could not have imagined Espanyol’s current position in the table, when he took over as Coach.

The Mexican was brought in to replace Mauricio Pochettino at the end of November, with Los Pericos bottom of the table.

However, after the weekend’s 2-2 draw at home to Real Sociedad, the Catalans sit 12 points clear of the relegation zone, in 12th place.

“I would have cut off my finger has you told me when I took over that we would not be 12 points clear of the relegation zone,” enthused Aguirre after Sunday afternoon’s game.

“The draw with Real is fair. Their goals were somewhat fortunate, but they did create more chances. Real are the team to have played the better football.

“It is not for nothing that they have lost only the one game in the second half of the season. Before us were a great team.”
