‘Second goal killed Osasuna’

Jose Luis Mendilibar lamented Atletico Madrid’s ability in continually beating his Osasuna side, admitting that Diego Costa’s second was decisive.

It is now three consecutive away wins in La Liga for Atleti over Osasuna, even if the home side’s Coach felt his side could not have done much more differently.

“The game was as expected, with much aerial play and nothing done in defence to complicate matters,” reflected Mendilibar afterwards.

“In the first half we conceded a goal in trying to play offside, and in the second came the other goal. These are things we cannot prevent. That second one killed us.

“I think it is not a mistake and that he [Diego Costa] did not intend for the ball to go where it eventually did.

“Then, the rest counts for nothing, the chances we had and did not finish. We could have played them better or worse, but we have to finish and to score.

“We have not done well against Atleti in recent years, it is hard for us as they do not play how we like.”

The home support jeered the team during the encounter.

“They are free to think that we could not get back into the game. I would continue encouraging the team all the way, but on this I have nothing to say.

“We have not managed to escape from the relegation fight. We have zero points in three games. Eventually, we will get to 39 or 40 points to save us.”
