Aguirre: Valladolid were defensive

Javier Aguirre commented on Real Valladolid’s defensive approach to Sunday afternoon, but did not blame his Espanyol players for the 0-0 that followed.

Los Pericos played out the goalless draw at home after being frustrated for the 90 by an organised Valladolid defence.

“The result is fair. Valladolid were very clean, looking for the long ball out to Manucho. We tried, but they did not move from their set-up,” Aguirre summed up post-match.

“I have nothing to reproach my players for, how they played or their attitude. I’m satisfied with the intensity that was put into the game, but maybe we lacked depth in the final third of the pitch.

“At this stage of the season, opponents, particularly those who visit you at home, do so increasingly so as to defend. And so it proved difficult here to create the space.

“Therefore, there is no-one to criticise. The reality is that we lack 10 points for the coveted 42 and we will wait for Celta to play [on Monday night] to see how we stand in the table.”
