‘Espanyol could have done more’

Javier Aguirre admitted Atletico Madrid deserved the three points from Sunday evening, but regretted his Espanyol side’s wastefulness.

Los Periquitos had a one-man advantage for the entire second half after Gabi’s second yellow card, but they could not find an equaliser to Radamel Falcao’s first-half penalty, to leave the Calderon with a 1-0 defeat.

“Atletico’s victory was deserved because they scored the goal and had other chances, but I think it was more for our mistake of wanting to attack than for any other reason,” regretted Aguirre post-match.

“We tried but we came up against a well-organised opponent, even when they were playing with one less. We could not score and this is the summary of the game.

“We were not calm on the ball and we knew that a detail would decide the game. They were very well organised and they have lethal players on the counter-attack.

“We lacked a bit of patience. We need to reflected and continue to work to achieve our target soon. We knew we were going to suffer, but we must continue sweating.

“When you lose, you have done something not well, in La Liga. We had no patience with the ball, I think we could have done more.”
