‘My contract up to Valencia’

Ricardo Costa has put the onus over signing a new at Valencia entirely on the club, saying that any decision is now in their hands.

The defender has taken on a senior role at the club since joining in 2010, but sees talks over extending his deal beyond its June 2014 expiry so far delayed.

“People already know what I want, I give it all for the team, all the talking will be between the President [Manuel Llorente] and my agent,” commented the Portuguese international.

“It is logical that every player wants to feel valued. I put in my best, I get along great with the President, he wants me to stay here.

“It depends on the club, the President and [sporting director] Braulio [Vazquez]. I’m happy here, I’m one of the captains and I give everything for Valencia. It is Valencia that must now decide.”

The defender was asked of Valencia’s up-turn in form since Ernesto Valverde took over, and of the chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

“The future is not an exact science. Now, with Valverde, things have changed because the players are better suited to what the Coach wants.

“Will he sign a new contract too? He is doing very well, people are comfortable with him, everyone is following him, but the players do not have the power to decide.”
