Jemez: Not for a lack of effort

Paco Jemez lamented Rayo Vallecano’s lack of effectiveness in the final third, which saw them fail to take advantage of Real Madrid’s 10 men.

Madrid played 70 minutes of Sunday’s encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu with 10 men after Sergio Ramos’ early red card, but Rayo failed to convert their 68 per cent possession into goals and lost out to the early goals from Alvaro Morata and Ramos.

“It was not for a lack of attitude because we fought, but we were unsuccessful. I did not expect this situation,” reflected Jemez at the end.

“We created chances to score but we should have done more in the final third of the field. We have players who can hurt a team when they are reduced to 10 men.

“We lacked nerve in the final stretch of the pitch because most chances ended in nothing and we died on the shore.

“I prefer to play against 10. The thing is you have to know how to interpret the game. It was good for us, but the greatness of Madrid is that, they create twice and score twice.

“I do not know if it was playing in the Bernabeu or see that we were against 10, but we lacked decisiveness.

“It is not a matter of courage. This team is brave. We leave with the feeling of having played a month without a goal.”
