Mallorca split over Caparros

Mallorca’s board of directors are split over whether or not to keep Coach Joaquin Caparros in charge at the club.

The 57-year-old came into the club in October 2011 and engineered a midseason change in fortune to take the Balearic Islands side to just three points off European qualification.

However, with a number of changes in the playing squad over the summer, Caparros has struggled to replicate the club’s form and defeat at Espanyol on Friday saw them drop to 19th in the table.

Mallorca’ second largest shareholder Utz Claasen last week publicly called on Caparros to resign ‘out of dignity’, having overseen a ‘miserable sporting situation’ the result of his falling out with ‘important members of the team’.

This has now been followed up by reports that a number of other members of the board are also growing increasingly concerned at the situation and at several of Caparros’ decisions in recent games.

Majority shareholder Llorenc Serra Ferrer is said to still back the tactician at the moment, but is understood to be likely to also have to consider Caparros’ future based on the results in coming games.
