Costa sorry for Madrid thrashing

Ricardo Costa has said sorry to the Valencia fans for the team’s 5-0 humbling at the hands of Real Madrid.

The defender was involved in Sunday evening’s one-sided match that saw the visitors grab their five-goal advantage before the half-time break had even been reached.

“They are a strong team, but we cannot be so vulnerable. It cannot happen again, for us to concede so many goals in such a short time,” the Portuguese centre-back reflected at a Press conference today.

“In the first few minutes we were at the same level as Madrid, but they scored with their first counter-attack, we tried to balance that out, and then they scored the second.

“Thereafter it was complicated, the team lost its balance and the counters from Real Madrid kept coming – they are the best team doing that, for the players that they have.”

Valencia have the chance to make up for the disappointment by re-welcoming Madrid to Mestalla this Wednesday for the second leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

“We know that we cannot lose the ball in midfield, we cannot play as openly in the middle, we have much to learn from.

“We have to win on Wednesday. We know that Madrid will be more relaxed and it will be a totally different game.

“We must play with our head, unlike yesterday, where we were open all over the place, because we cannot have the same story again.”
