Iker Casillas has been determined today to have been the world’s second best goalkeeper during the last 25 years.
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics, who voted the 31-year-old as the world’s best for the calendar year of 2012, have determined that he ranks only second to Gianluigi Buffon in a wider-reaching analysis.
The IFFHS has polled ‘selected editorial staff and experts from all the football continents’ for a number of awards on an annual basis and have taken a look back at the past 25 years’ worth of votes to determine the highest ranking goalkeepers.
Each position a goalkeeper achieved in each year’s vote has been given a score from 1987 to 2012, to determine the overall highest placed shot-stoppers of the past quarter of a century.
Juventus and Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon has come out on top, beating Casillas by just 13 ‘points’. Edwin van der Sar is third, whilst Peter Schmeichel and Oliver Kahn complete the top five.
Former Barcelona ‘keeper Andoni Zubizarreta finished joint eighth in the poll alongside Walter Zenga, whilst Victor Valdes was ranked joint 17th overall.
