Athletic’s ‘community’ important

Oscar de Marcos has reflected that Athletic Bilbao’s ‘close-knit community’ is the reason he has faith in the club reversing their fortune this season.

Athletic currently sit 14th in the table having collected just 21 points from the opening first half of the League season.

“The close-knit community within the team is the most important element to turning around our situation,” declared De Marcos to reporters today.

“We have spoken many times between us, not just when things were going wrong but when they were also going right. We will eat together, many weekdays.

“If you do not see someone on one day, you will the next here. And this is ultimately what makes this team great.

“And I do not think there is anyone in the dressing room who does not believe in Marcelo Bielsa, and that is why we keep playing the football that you see on the field, for better or worse, but always with the same essence.

“There is still a long way to go in the League. I understand that people are pessimistic, we should be positive as we try to straighten things out gradually.

“The solution, as always, is to keep working, little by little, to think positively, to stay together and to look ahead.”

Athletic face Real Betis next up in the League.

“They are fourth, which is difficult to achieve at this stage of the season, so they deserve it. They are playing good football and Ruben Castro is scoring with every chance he gets.

“Matches against Betis have been very difficult, but we will still try to impose our game. It will benefit us to try and lead the game.

“The important thing is to not let them take over as it is clear that that is why they are currently doing well.”
