Bielsa won’t attack recklessly

Marcelo Bielsa has made clear that Athletic Bilbao’s search for goals won’t end if it has to come at the expense of defending.

The Basques have not scored more than once in a game in the Primera Division since the middle of November and only have 22 League strikes to their name so far.

It was suggested from training earlier this week that the Argentine would start Fernando Llorente in attack alongside Aritz Aduriz for Friday’s match with Rayo Vallecano.

“What we want is to win and for that to attack, but we will not defend badly so as to attack,” warned Bielsa to reporters, though.

“The problems we have against Levante [last weekend] were caused by ourselves. The opponent attacked us five times and scored three goals.

“I’m not concerned that Aduriz is scoring most of the team’s goals [11 of the 22 in the League]. To have a striker who scores goals should never be a cause for concern.

“In this case, we should not be reliant on him, though, it is a collective responsibility. We should score more and concede less.”
